Pattern Notes: Yuletide Gnomes
from Christmas Gifts Extra, from Simply Knitting Magazine UK November 2005

This is an Alan Dart pattern. I made this for my mom for Mother's Day 2006. He has beans in his butt for support.

Yarn: Sirdar Country Style DK in Greystone and Cherry; Hayfield Toytime DK in Flesh Tone; and Sirdar Foxy in Ermine
Needles: 3mm and 6mm
Other: I got the beans and stuffing from Michaels.

Care: Hand wash. Lay flat to dry.

This is what the magazine said about gnomes:

History of the Swedish Gnome
In Sweden, these little chaps are called jultomten - which literally translates as 'the Christmas Gnome' - and really, they don't look too different from our garden gnomes. The myth surrounding jultomten is not too far removed from our own Santa Claus, because he is the Swedish version of St. Nicholas. In Sweden, a member of the family or a 'chartered' neighbor dresses up as jultomten, so that he or she is as unrecognizable as possible. With a sack over his or her shoulder, they then knock on the door, asking the traditional question, "Are there any good children here?"
